Responsible sourcing

New Look Group believes that it is never acceptable to harm animals in the manufacture or testing of its products. Because of this we have developed an animal welfare policy that covers all products retailed by New Look. This policy is divided into two sections and details our stance on both Animal Protection and Animal Testing.

RSPCA

Animal Protection
The first part of our policy covers any animal derived materials used in our products. This part of our policy covers the following areas:

Animal Fur: We will not use any real fur in our products. This includes both farmed fur and fur which may be a by-product of the meat industry.

Endangered Species: We will not use any materials derived from species that appear on the CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) or IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) lists of endangered species.

Leather or Skin Products: We will not use any leather or skin materials that are obtained from live skinning or live boiling. All leather used for New Look must be a by-product of the meat industry. We will not use Karakul or any other leather or skin materials that are the products of unnatural abortions.

Live-Plucked Feather or Down: We will not use feathers or down obtained from the live plucking of birds.

Australian Merino Wool: We will not source merino wool from Australia due to the widespread practice of mulesing in its production.

Mongolian Lambs Fur: Due to the practices involved in the traditional methods of slaughter we will not use this sheepskin variety.

In addition to the specific points above New Look expects all animal derived materials used in our products to have come from animals treated humanely and according to the recommendations on animal welfare set out by the OIE in their Animal Health Codes.

Animal Testing
The second part of our policy covers the testing of cosmetics on animals. New Look believes that animal testing for cosmetic purposes is not acceptable. We recognise that customer safety is of paramount importance but fully believe that this can be assured without the use of animal testing.

Because of this we will not conduct, commission, or be party to any animal testing of cosmetic products or ingredients. We will also not knowingly purchase ingredients, formulations or products from suppliers that have conducted, commissioned or been party to animal testing for cosmetic purposes after our agreed cut-off date. Our agreed cut-off date for animal testing is 1st August 1994, which is in line with the Humane Cosmetics Standard’s requirements.

Occasionally we may use animal derived ingredients in our cosmetic products but these must be collected without harm to animals.

Sustainable sourcing
We are striving to reduce the environmental impact of our products.  We realise that the bigger picture can only be achieved by a gradual process of research and by trialling fabrics made from sustainable sources.

In 2007 we launched our organic cotton range using cotton grown without the use of pesticides.  This is not only better for the environment, but also for the cotton farmers themselves.  In 2008 we sold an amazing 2.32 million organic cotton items, a 50% increase compared to 2007, and 4.2% of our womenswear was made using organic cotton.  In 2009 we launched another organic cotton range which included knitwear and received certification from the Soil Association.  Due to the tremendous success of this range, we then launched a range of tops made from bamboo, another naturally sustainable source.  We’ll continue to research even more fabrics made from sustainable sources so that we can help to protect our environment further and make use of our planet’s natural resources.
